...on Michael Jackson's passing today?
I was standing in line at a Ukrop's checkoout a couple of years ago. There were these two VCU-student-types in back of me, looking at tabloids, and they were saying, "Michael Jackson. He is so weird. Was he ever any good?" And I promptly turned around to face them squarely, and I said "He was fabulous." And he really was. Put aside the controversy, the surgeries, the weirdness. He was simply so bloody gifted. Poor kid--his gift deprived him of anything resembling a childhood.
My first album, played on my little plastic stereo from Sears, was ABC by The Jackson 5. I will never tire of that recording.

Thank you. Joe was home on a quick dinner break. We both cried. For that beautiful little kid who sang his heart out with the Jackson 5. For the exuberant young man we idolized in our high school years. He WAS fabulous. And there lies the tragedy. I don't know anyone who isn't conflicted about the creepy reclusive adult with the questionable reputation. But his talent was undeniable.

yes, weirdness aside, it feels like a little piece of our youth went with him. Don't mean that a dramatically as it sounds. Just a little heart hurt.
The 80s are officially dead when our moon-walking king of pop has gone to teach the angels all the right Thriller steps. Man, he was so talented.
The 80's are dead...that's what I was thinking last night. You all know what an 80's music nut I am...and I felt so old last night...because every song or video was marked by something in high school or college. And Debra you are so right, regardless of who he became, his talent and impact on music and our generation is undeniable. Man...it sucks that he doesn't get to have a comeback...even if the comeback ws only based on the hope of a generation of adoring fans.
I'll never forget watching the Motown 25 special and seeing the moonwalk for the first time, my jaw agape. "What WAS that?" But Michael did that to us time and again, stunning and amazing us with his moves and his songs.
It is so tragic that he was denied this comeback. Maybe it's more tragic that he was denied any semblance of a normal life from such a tender age, and that he tried desperately to learn how love and joy and childish innocence worked for "normal" people in their lives.
I'm so sad but also grateful for all he gave us. There just are so very few true legends, and here was one my own age who died way, way too soon.
